On March 13, 2014, an Open House Event was held at Mahogany Bay Village. The event ‘Summit by the Sea’ hosted a large group of potential home investors who are considering making Belize their home. The guests were given a tour of the chic, yet rustic and comfortable cottages that were completed as part of Phase one of the Mahogany Bay Village Project. Situated just south of San Pedro Belize on Ambergris Caye, Mahogany Bay Village was built to create smaller, smarter and more sustainable real estate in Belize.
When people are home, their surroundings are familiar and quickly become a part of the background of life. But when they go somewhere exotic on vacation, their eyes are wide open as they take in the unfamiliar setting in all its detail. This is why starting a design revolution is difficult, but changing things by planting new ideas in exotic settings can be quite effective. Seaside spawned the New Urbanism movement as a resort town. Because it was visited by millions over the years, the dream of seaside wend home with most of these millions, planting the seeds of traditional neighborhoods all over the US and abroad. This is exactly what they are hoping to happen at Mahogany Bay Village.
Mahogany Bay Village Is A New Urbanism project
The first New Urbanism project in Ambergris Caye, this development celebrates the indigenous traditional building materials of Belize. Units range from small studios to 3-bedroom family cottages. The homes were designed to make people happier in a house half the size of the one they might ordinarily want. To be that much smaller and smarter, clever space-saving things were done, so that one can store more things in such a home then in the sheetrock box houses normally built. These homes use every available cubic inch of space, transforming interior walls into storage units, building cozy booths instead of drafty dining rooms and storing clothes in cabinetry like armoires instead of drywall closets.
Everything Is Maximized At Mahogany Bay Village
These space-saving ideas do not just end at the front door, because space is not wasted outdoors. Rather than planting lawns all around a house that will forever be mowed, poisoned and fertilized, the homes are surrounded with interconnected garden rooms designed to cool the dwellers during brunch on a summer morning or store the warmth of the autumn afternoon sun all through the evening. All these garden rooms are not just decorative; most of the plant material can be edible, from fruit trees and berry bushes to grape vine and vegetables. The key is that all the edible plants should be designed in a way that is as lovable as an ornamental garden.
